A large semi truck carrying an oversize load caused significant disruptions on Tuesday evening, December 3, in Lafayette, Louisiana, after hitting an overpass on Interstate 10.
The accident: The incident took place around 5:30 p.m. when the truck collided with the I-10 eastbound overpass. This collision forced a temporary closure of I-10 and I-49 for cleanup and structural inspection.
- Traffic on both northbound and southbound lanes of I-49 was halted.
- I-10 eastbound at University Avenue was also affected by the closure.
Where things stand: Both I-10 and I-49 are now open for traffic, according to News 15. However, exit ramps from I-10 East to I-49 North and from I-49 South to I-10 East remain closed indefinitely.
Looking back: A similar bridge incident occurred in 2023, requiring extensive repairs due to structural damage.
Thankfully, despite the disruption, both highways have resumed normal operations though specific ramps need further attention.
