Six killed after car and van crash into semi on I-485

North Carolina troopers have kicked off a 90-day traffic enforcement campaign on I-485 after a tragic wreck killed six people on July 26, 2025, near Charlotte.

What happened: A Honda CRV driven by 16-year-old Paul Sauer changed lanes and hit a Chrysler van. Both vehicles collided with the side of a tractor trailer. Sauer died at the scene. Five of the six people in the van also died. Only one survivor, a 16-year-old female from the van, was hospitalized. The truck driver was not hurt.

  • The crash has led the Highway Patrol to launch "I-485 Alive," aiming for more patrols and safer driving.
  • Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office are teaming up for the enforcement push.

Why it matters: Authorities say the goal is to crack down on unsafe driving and save lives on the busy loop.

The special enforcement will run for 90 days along I-485.
