Six killed after van and SUV end up under semi on I-485

Six people died and one person was hurt after a major crash on Interstate 485 at Walkers Ferry Road near Charlotte, North Carolina. The wreck happened around 11:06 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2025.

What happened: A 16-year-old driving a Honda CRV merged into the right lane and hit a Chrysler van. The impact sent both the Honda and van into the side of a tractor trailer, trapping the passenger vehicles underneath.

  • Five of the six people in the van were killed, including the driver, a 23-year-old woman, and three children ages 8 and under.
  • The teen driver of the Honda CRV also died.
  • The only survivor from the van is a 16-year-old girl who was taken to the hospital.
  • The truck driver was not injured.

Rescue efforts: First responders worked for more than five hours in high heat to lift the tractor trailer and reach the cars. Extra crews were called due to the tough conditions and long operation, according to WCNC.

The outer loop of I-485 was closed for several hours as crews cleared the scene.

Investigators say no charges are expected, and state troopers determined the semi truck driver was not at fault.
