Teen girls found inside refrigerated trailer after multi-vehicle crash

Two teenage girls were found inside a refrigerated semi trailer after a crash on I-15 in Lindon, Utah, around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, September 17.

The accident: Troopers say truck driver Jacob Ortell Scott lost a tire, which hit two cars and led to a chain-reaction accident involving another big rig and several vehicles. The pile-up injured a handful of people, with one person seriously hurt.

  • While checking the wreck, troopers spotted "two sets of eyes" peeking out from the trailer.
  • They found the 12- and 14-year-old girls locked inside. Both were unharmed but scared.
  • The trailer was set to 30°F and had bedding inside. The girls had been riding this way for about 2 hours, traveling from Huntington to Salt Lake City.

What officers found out: According to investigators, Scott is half-sibling to the girls. They were on their way to help another family member and take school tests. The cab was full, so the girls rode in the back.

Utah Highway Patrol says the girls could not get out by themselves. No injuries were reported for either girl after the crash, reported FOX 13 News.

The charges: Scott was arrested and faces child abuse charges because the teens were put in a dangerous spot in a cold, locked trailer. He is currently held without bail.
