During this year’s Brake Safety Week, held August 24-30, inspectors across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico checked more than 15,000 commercial vehicles for brake problems.
The results: 2,296 trucks and buses were pulled off the road due to brake system violations, making up about 15% of all inspected vehicles.
- In the U.S., inspectors checked 13,700 commercial vehicles and found 2,035 with major brake issues.
- Canadian inspectors did 1,459 inspections and placed 260 vehicles out of service for brakes.
- Mexico had 16 inspections with a single brake-related out-of-service finding.
What inspectors found: The most common issue that got trucks pulled from service was having 20% or more of their brakes not working right. This was seen in 1,199 of the out-of-service trucks, making up more than half of the brake violations found.
Inspectors also looked extra closely at drums and rotors this year, with 113 violations on those parts and 39 trucks put out of service because of them, according to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.
Looking ahead: The next Brake Safety Week will be held August 23-29, 2026.
