Three killed, five injured in eight vehicle crash on I-55

Three people lost their lives and five were injured in a serious crash that happened around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 28, on northbound I-55 near Festus, Missouri.

What happened: A semi truck traveling north ran into the back of a Toyota Camry as traffic slowed in the right lane. This set off a chain reaction that involved a total of eight vehicles—seven passenger cars and the truck.

  • Troopers said the Louisiana-based truck driver was not paying attention to the slow traffic ahead.
  • Three people died at the scene. Two of the five injured were reported in serious condition.
  • The crash forced all northbound lanes of I-55 to close for several hours as investigators worked and crews cleared the site.
  • All lanes reopened by about 10:20 p.m., according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report.

The crash remains under investigation by state authorities.
