Three killed, five injured in eight vehicle crash on I-55

Three people lost their lives and five were injured in a serious crash that happened around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 28, on northbound I-55 near Festus, Missouri.

What happened: A semi truck traveling north ran into the back of a Toyota Camry as traffic slowed in the right lane. This set off a chain reaction that involved a total of eight vehicles—seven passenger cars and the truck.

Troopers said the Louisiana-based truck driver was not paying attention to the slow traffic ahead.
Three people died at the scene. Two of the five injured were reported in serious condition.
The crash forced all northbound lanes of I-55 to close for several hours as investigators worked and crews cleared the site.
All lanes reopened by about 10:20 p.m., according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report.

The crash remains under investigation by state authorities.
