Tractor trailer fire causes major backup on I-75

Abandoned tractor trailers have caused a major traffic jam on I-75 northbound in Monroe County, Georgia, since Tuesday night.

The problem: A semi truck caught fire near High Falls Road, blocking all lanes until late morning Wednesday, January 22.

  • Truck drivers, stuck because of the icy conditions, left their trucks on the road, worsening the traffic situation.
  • Efforts to remove the burned semi have been stalled due to dangerous weather conditions.

Current status: Some lanes reopened just before 9:30 a.m., but traffic remains slow-moving reported Atlanta News First.

  • The Georgia Department of Transportation is advising travelers to use US 41 north as a detour to avoid the backups.

Looking ahead: There are no plans yet to clear the abandoned rigs as safety concerns continue with the winter weather.

Thankfully, no injuries have been reported from this incident.
