A collision between a train and a semi truck turned into an unexpected donation event for a Texas community on Monday.
Details: Around 7:45 p.m., the train hit the semi along Highway 80 in Midland County, spilling frozen pizzas all over the roadway.
- First responders saw an opportunity and called local organizations to collect the pizzas for the community.
- The Midland Soup Kitchen Ministry quickly stepped in and filled their trailer to the brim with pizzas.
What they're saying: "We’re so thankful for the work and for the mindfulness of the firefighters to not let it all go to waste but put it to a great use,” said Nathen Ivy, an Administrator for the Midland Soup Kitchen Ministry, to First Alert 7 News.
Moving fast: Volunteers worked with first responders to move the pizzas into a freezer within 30 minutes. The next day, the soup kitchen distributed them to local families.
Nancy Ivy, the director of the soup kitchen, praised the effort: “With the economy now, it’s hard. I can’t even imagine feeding a family of five. With this gift, we know that children will have a pizza waiting for them when they get home from school," she said, according to First Alert 7 News.
Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident. The soup kitchen expects to keep giving out pizzas until the end of the week.
