A semi truck caught fire and crashed off the I-65 overpass in downtown Louisville on Friday morning, June 13, shutting down traffic and creating a dramatic scene for passing drivers.
The incident: The crash happened around 10 a.m. near the Kennedy Bridge. Witnesses saw flames shoot out from the wheels and heard a loud explosion as the semi dangled from the ramp before falling onto I-64 east/I-71 north below.
- The truck driver jumped about 20 feet from the hanging cab and was able to walk away, suffering only minor injuries.
- The trailer was empty at the time of the accident, and no other vehicles were hit by the falling rig.
Aftermath and road closures: Emergency crews quickly put out the fire, and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet conducted safety checks on the bridge. They found no structural damage from the crash, but some ramps and lanes were closed for cleanup and inspection.
Officials say I-65 south at the Kennedy Bridge should fully reopen by approximately 8 p.m., reported WLKY.
The cause of the crash is still being investigated.
