Truck driver's wife attacked after murder suspect tries to hijack rig

A truck driver's wife was attacked by a murder suspect who tried to steal their big rig on Interstate 65 in Alabama on Sunday, May 18. Matthew and Michelle Acevedo were running team when a man jumped on the driver's side of their truck during a police manhunt.

The details: The suspect, Mike Thomas, had just run from police after a chase. He flashed a gun at Michelle, who was behind the wheel, and tried to force his way in.

  • Michelle did hard braking maneuvers to keep the suspect off balance. Matthew says he was slammed into the dash as he tried to retrieve their firearm from a purse.
  • Matthew fired their gun outside the truck, but says he didn't want to hit his wife so aimed away. He ran out of rounds and the suspect managed to cling to the mirror, then pistol-whipped Michelle several times.
  • The suspect allegedly fired shots, gave up, and ran into the woods. SWAT teams with dogs and helicopters caught him later that day.
  • Michelle needed stitches, and their truck was left with multiple bullet holes.

What's next: Thomas is facing robbery and assault charges. Matthew said, "Even with him on the side of the truck wearing a highlighter t-shirt, and our truck is white, none of the law enforcement...saw him, and my wife was blaring the horn as we passed up all the cop cars," according to FOX10 News.
