Trucker chain law checks increase on I-70 mountain corridor

Truckers traveling I-70 in Colorado should be prepared for new chain law enforcement checks starting this week, lasting until late May. On February 25, the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) announced these operations focused on compliance with chain requirements across the I-70 mountain corridor.

The specifics: Multi-agency teams will conduct weekly checks from Glenwood Springs to Golden. These operations aren't limited to bad weather days, aiming to prepare drivers ahead of adverse conditions, reported the Colorado State Patrol.

  • The CSP recommends commercial motor vehicles carry chains or other traction devices from September through May.
  • Operations include speed enforcement and ensuring adherence to chain laws to prevent extended highway closures.

What's expected: CSP will announce the checks publicly each morning and share outcomes on social media.

The checks highlight the importance of chain compliance to secure road viability in challenging mountain conditions. Operations continue until Memorial Day, signaling the close of the chain law season.
