On Thursday, August 7th, two Pennsylvania state troopers were shot and wounded after responding to a call in Thompson, Susquehanna County. The situation started when a 61-year-old man, Carmine Faino, shot and killed his neighbor, Lori Wasko, outside her home.
How it unfolded: Just after 11 a.m., Wasko’s boyfriend called 911. Troopers Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins arrived and were immediately fired upon by Faino, who was armed with a semi-automatic rifle.
- Perechinsky was shot in the chest and torso, while Jenkins was hit in both arms.
- An emergency worker driving an SUV was also shot at and crashed while trying to escape. He was hospitalized, according to 6abc.
Trucker helps block danger: After being shot, Trooper Perechinsky pulled Jenkins to safety. Despite his injuries, he flagged down a passing semi truck and directed the driver to use his rig to block the roadway, stopping others from entering the active shooting zone.
Officers tried to negotiate with Faino, but he continued shooting at law enforcement and even took down a police drone. Members of the Special Emergency Response Team then shot and killed Faino to end the threat.
Perechinsky and Jenkins were flown to hospitals. By Thursday night, both were reported in stable condition. The shooting is still under investigation.
