Tucson trucker sentenced after armed confrontation with former boss

A truck driver from Tucson has been sentenced to 29 years in prison for trying to kill his former boss in Phoenix. The attempt happened on November 1, 2023, at United Freight Service.

What police say happened: Zane Hammond, 34, got upset after quitting his job, then drove from Tucson to Phoenix carrying a shotgun. He went into his old boss's office and fired several times, but the boss flipped his desk and used it as cover. Hammond then pointed the gun at the Vice President who was also in the office.

  • The Vice President tackled Hammond, wrestled away his shotgun, and held him down in a chokehold until police arrived.
  • No one was hit or injured in the shooting.

The backstory: Hammond had worked at the company for about two years but left after being scolded about his driving and hygiene. Prosecutors say he got drunk before returning armed and angry.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder and will spend nearly three decades in prison, according to FOX 10 Phoenix.
