Two killed after box truck slams pickup into stopped semi

Two people lost their lives in a fiery crash Tuesday, July 1, on I-96 westbound in Ionia County, Michigan.

What happened: The accident took place around 3:14 p.m. A semi truck was stopped due to heavy traffic in a construction zone merge. A pickup truck pulled up behind the semi. Moments later, a box truck approached and couldn’t stop, slamming into the back of the pickup and pushing it forward into the stopped trailer.

The impact left the box truck nearly on top of the pickup.
Both the pickup and box truck caught fire, trapping both drivers inside.
First responders said both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The semi truck driver was not hurt.

The cause: The Ionia County Sheriff’s Office says there was a lot of traffic leading into the construction zone. Drivers were not keeping enough space between vehicles, according to WZZM13.

Westbound I-96 was closed for about seven hours and reopened by 10:20 p.m. that night.
