The Vail Pass Rest Area on I-70 in Colorado is back open as of October 1, after being closed for more than a year for construction.
What’s new: The rest area now has more parking spots for trucks. This means truckers won’t have to park on the highway shoulder or ramps, which is a lot safer for everyone.
- The new design keeps trucks, cars, and pedestrians separated, cutting down the chance for accidents in the lot.
- Better pull-off areas give tired drivers a safe place to stop and rest.
- The rest area is now ADA accessible, making it easier for all drivers to use the facilities.
- The site also gives CDOT crews a better spot to stage equipment for winter weather or emergencies.
The $21 million upgrade took place at over 10,000 feet elevation, making work tough for the crews. The rest area was closed since May 2023 for the project.
With more truck parking and safer layout, drivers on I-70 can now count on the Vail Pass Rest Area again for stops and rest breaks.
