White-out conditions cause massive pileup on I-96

The pileup on I-96 in Grand Rapids, Michigan on January 20 involved about 15 vehicles, disrupting traffic on Monday morning.

The incident: The crash happened during white-out conditions and resulted in injuries, but thankfully, none were life-threatening. A person was hit after stepping out of their vehicle.

  • Among the involved vehicles, a box truck overturned and a semi-truck ended up in a ditch.
  • The crashed vehicles were situated near Michigan Highway 37, amidst challenging weather conditions.

Big impact: The crash closed eastbound I-96 near Alpine Avenue for approximately 1.5 hours. The ramp remains closed for further cleanup.

  • State police noted that some drivers traveled too fast for the snowy conditions.

Thankfully, the highway reopened after a brief closure, and no serious injuries occurred, despite the severe conditions.
