Wisconsin man charged in tragic tow truck driver hit-and-run

A tragic event on Christmas Eve led to charges against a Wisconsin man after a fatal hit-and-run incident along I-94. The tow truck driver, 40-year-old Hussain Farhat from Chicago, was struck and killed while assisting a vehicle near Summit, Wisconsin.

The situation: Farhat was loading a disabled vehicle when a blue minivan crashed into him. The van fled the scene, leaving Farhat critically injured.

  • Farhat was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after the accident.
  • Witnesses reported the minivan speeding at 80 to 90 mph just before the crash, reported Fox6 News.

The suspect: Christopher Sponholz, a 39-year-old resident of Wales, Wisconsin, turned himself in following an anonymous tip about the vehicle’s location.

  • He was charged with Hit & Run Causing Death.
  • Sponholz claimed he initially thought he had struck a deer.
  • His minivan was recovered by police at his residence.

Community response: Tow truck drivers gathered on Christmas night for a vigil honoring Farhat, showing solidarity in the wake of the incident.

The preliminary hearing for Sponholz is scheduled for February 5, providing a chance for the victim's family and community to seek further justice.
