DOT keeps trucker drug testing rates steady for 2025

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced that random drug and alcohol testing rates for truck drivers will stay the same for 2025.

The details: Random drug tests will continue at a 50% rate, and alcohol testing will remain at 10% for safety-sensitive workers, including truckers.

  • These rates haven't changed since 2020, after the random drug testing rate increased from 25% to 50% due to higher positive test results.
  • In 2018, the positive rate for controlled substances was 1%, prompting the increase the following year.

Background: According to the FMCSA, the testing rate is reviewed annually and adjusted based on reported positive test rates for the preceding year.

For the testing rate to drop back to 25%, the violation rate needs to stay below 1% but above 0.5% for two years.

Random tests ensure safety across the transportation sector and impact regulations for truck drivers according to the DOT.
